Candice Olson Bedroom Wallpaper Collection

<div style="margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">Elegant ostrich-skin prints, mod metallic paisleys and shimmering sisal highlight the Candice Olson Collection of Fine Wallpapers. The detailed and sophisticated collection by popular host of HGTV's hit show Divine Design, is Olson's first foray into wallpaper design. "This collection reflects my style, referencing the best of traditional design, but reinterpreting it in a modern, stylized way to create a current, but classic look," says Candice.</div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsAXQ09uxyZKvZgCsyI0lxpd2VKT1kYx-1My4DnJ-Hy863z-bV7ZpP1-piySHLalDa7_qFwTEpGLZvkxmlsQvbvCvYxpP61pqXtfn_XP2ACka1mri-YzCRj8GohLjzn0J9SFGsYCdbw8Y/s1600/Candice_Olson_bedroom_wallpaper_design_2011_14.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629813447483061714" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsAXQ09uxyZKvZgCsyI0lxpd2VKT1kYx-1My4DnJ-Hy863z-bV7ZpP1-piySHLalDa7_qFwTEpGLZvkxmlsQvbvCvYxpP61pqXtfn_XP2ACka1mri-YzCRj8GohLjzn0J9SFGsYCdbw8Y/s400/Candice_Olson_bedroom_wallpaper_design_2011_14.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; Wallpaper on the Playroom Ceiling

<center></center><div style="text-align: justify;">The ceiling in the playroom is really low - just under eight feet. It actually feels nice and cozy, especially for the kids, but I wanted to try and trick the eye a little. I hung the yellow curtains almost up to the ceiling and that helped, but it felt like we needed something a little more exciting up on or by the ceiling.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 26.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/26.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">I've always loved Julia Rothman's Daydream wallpaper from Hygge & West. In a middle-of-the-night design session I remembered the pattern and reached out the company to see if they had enough rolls in stock to send me a rush shipment. We were only a few days out from the Domino shoot at this point and I needed that paper ASAP!! Hygge & West was <i>wonderful </i>to work with and they rushed those couple of rolls out right away.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 30.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/30.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 11.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/11.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br /><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><div style="text-align: justify;">I went with the green color way, which has a creamy background, soft blue clouds and the prettiest color of jade green on the sweet little birdies. When the girls walked in after the paper hangers were finished, there were all sorts of oohs and ahhs and even some squeals. :) A very good sign. Gracie called it magical, which was pretty much the perfect compliment. I think it feels pretty magical too.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">We finished out the edges with just some casing trim (no room for even a short crown) that we painted with left over paint from the bathroom ceiling (Farrow and Ball's Pale Powder). We matched the baseboards too and left the walls white (Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace).</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 31.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/31.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The light fixture was a happy find at Lowes! It was a steal at $30!</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 28.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/28.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 29.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/29.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The wallpaper was a relatively affordable way to quickly transform this space. I spent almost no money on anything else in the playroom, so I felt good about investing in the couple of rolls and the labor for the paper hangers. I did save a lot of money by prepping the walls myself. We skim coated every surface, including the ceiling, with hot mud and then primed it all. It was a ton of work, but it helped me feel better about hiring out the paper.  And really, we were so out of time, there was no way I could have hung this by myself. Plus it turns out there are all sorts of fancy contraptions the paper hanger used to install the long sheets at this angle. Tricky stuff! Sometimes it's best to leave installation to professionals - precious wallpaper is one of those times I think.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 27.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/27.jpg" /></div><br />I couldn't be happier with this room. We use it all day long and it feels like such a happy, welcoming space where the girls can play and read and work on homework.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 12.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/12.jpg" /></div>

Reader DIY: Fireworks Wall Stencil

Hi guys! - Just a quick update for the locals planning to come to the <a href="http://workshops.homedepot.com/workshops/do-it-yourself-workshops?cm_mmc=socialmedia-_-Blogger-_-DIY-_-DIY-Workshops-Registration-Link" target="_blank">Home Depot DIY Workshop</a> tomorrow. I wanted to clarify that we won't be making the <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/07/diy-branch-light.html" target="_blank">lighting DIY</a> I shared last week, although I'd be more than happy to help you find and even make the structure tomorrow at the Tempe store on Baseline. The lighting workshop, which starts at 10:00 am, will be lead by the store's DIY workshop leader and I'll just be there to talk a little bit and mostly just hang out with you all! :) We'll be talking about using different types of lighting and bulbs in your home and sharing tips on how to switch out old lights for more energy-efficient ones. <a href="http://workshops.homedepot.com/workshops/do-it-yourself-workshops?cm_mmc=socialmedia-_-Blogger-_-DIY-_-DIY-Workshops-Registration-Link" target="_blank">Hope you can come</a>!<br /><br />________________<br /><br />I really love getting emails with links to your projects. <a href="http://www.meghanmarymorrow.blogspot.com/2014/06/fireworks-family-room.html" target="_blank">Meghan Morrow</a> sent me this stenciling project she did in her home and I LOVE how it turned out! Her husband is in the Army and they live on base, so they move a lot. She had been dying to use Albert Hadley's Fireworks wallpaper (made by Hinson, distributed by Donghia) in her home for years, but it didn't make any sense for them to invest in that kind of installation.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo Hinson-Fireworks-Wallpaper.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/Hinson-Fireworks-Wallpaper.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><a href="http://laybabylay.com/thundercat" target="_blank">image</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img alt=" photo bedding-albert-hadley-fireworks.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/bedding-albert-hadley-fireworks.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;">House Beautiful</div><br />Meghan bought a quilting stencil at a craft store and made her own version of the pattern with a sharpie and an X-acto knife!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_0265.jpeg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_0265.jpeg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><a name="more"></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_2407.jpeg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_2407.jpeg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">She mentioned to me it was a little time-consuming, but aren't the results worth it?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo TVRoom.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/TVRoom.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />We've been working on a stenciling project here at my house and I can attest that it can be a little tricky to get crisp lines on every repeat. It seems like the secret though is to not use too much paint and to keep both the stencil and the brush very clean.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo TV_1.jpeg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/TV_1.jpeg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />Remember that mirror project above? Meghan <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2012/01/diy-sunburst-mirrors-using-shims.html" target="_blank">used this tutorial</a> to make her own sunburst mirror. So many great DIYs in one place! I'm obsessed with her green curtains, too.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo DSC_6667.jpeg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/DSC_6667.jpeg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />Check out <a href="http://www.meghanmarymorrow.blogspot.com/2014/06/fireworks-family-room.html" target="_blank">Meghan's post</a> for all the details!

Wallpaper in the Entry

<center></center>I love how high the ceilings are in our entry, but it makes it a little bit tricky to decorate in there! The big walls just swallow up even two or three pieces of art stacked on each other.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5571.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/IMG_5571.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5578.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/IMG_5578.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />I'm so excited to share more, but at the twelfth hour before the big shoot next week, we have decided to wallpaper the entry! I am <i>beyond excited. </i><br /><i><br /></i><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo mIMG_5559.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/mIMG_5559.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><a name="more"></a><br /><i><br /></i>The wallpaper arrived within an hour of the wallpaper hanger today - just in time! We saved a little bit of money by prepping the walls ourselves, but I wish I could have DIYed the whole thing. I've hung wallpaper a bunch of times before and it's usually a doable project, but this was definitely a job for the pros. A big part of it is we are completely out of time and this was a last minute decision, but the bottom line is I get dizzy just thinking about carefully hanging those long sheets on a 18' ladder! It is worth every pretty penny to get to admire from afar on this one! ;)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5583.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/IMG_5583.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5576.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/IMG_5576.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>I can't wait to share the afters, but in the meantime, I'll show you my inspiration photos. DIY Plank Walls (and Painted Mudroom Floors!)

We are making some great progress on <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/06/valley-house-tour-mud-room.html" target="_blank">the mudroom</a> this week! Before we moved in and tackled the space, the room had <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/08/progress-in-mudroom.html" target="_blank">plant shelves aplenty</a> and highly textured walls.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><center></center></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo DSC_0622.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%209/DSC_0622.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">It's still a work in progress, but I love the direction we're going in here. The room is completely flooded with light all day long, so I decided to go dark and dramatic on the walls and the floors.</div><br /><img alt=" photo DSC_0679.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/DSC_0679.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Here's the full break down...</div><a name="more"></a><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">A couple days ago we headed over to Lowes to have the wood cut for the wall planks. We decided on 1/4" melamine boards because they're inexpensive, light and easy to hang. Lowes has a pretty generous lumber cutting policy. Usually they'll do all your cutting for free (even many multiple cuts like with these planks), but sometimes they'll charge 10-25 cents per cut. We cut my stack of five 8x4' melamine board ten times, so it wasn't that expensive to have the wood cut quickly and precisely. I had all the boards cut to be 6" wide and 4' long.</span></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6080.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6080.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The installation part is a breeze. You'll want a miter saw, a nail gun, a handful of nickels, a level, a hammer and maybe a nail set if you want to see no nail heads. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo aDSC_0434-1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/aDSC_0434-1.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">So to start, just use a level to hang your first plank up against the ceiling and then stagger the next plank underneath and maybe cut it down a little too so not every plank is the same length. You'll have lots of different lengths to choose from before long though as you hit corners and doors/windows. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6350-1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6350-1.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I used a couple of nickels to space out my planks before I nailed them in. Worked like a charm to create a small, consistent sized gap between the planks. And to make my nail heads more flush with the planks, I just tapped the nails the rest of the way in with a hammer. I didn't set mine in yet though because I don't mind seeing the shadow of the nails in the planks. </div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo ssDSC_0426-1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/ssDSC_0426-1.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">To fill in the plant shelf area above the closets, I sort of framed out the space with 1x2's and just nailed in the planks on the frame. I probably should have just drywalled in the space, but this worked too.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo sIMG_6371-1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/sIMG_6371-1.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">One of the great things about using melamine board is that it can be cut with a razor blade. If you score it over and over again, it actually cuts pretty easily. It was nice to not have to pull out my small Dremel saw or some other tool to cut around light switches and electrical outlets.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6353.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6353.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6356.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6356.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The room isn't finished yet. I'm still working on the built-ins part of the room, so the planking doesn't go all the way around the space yet. I got anxious though and decided to paint what I have done so far (the brown melamine was hurting my eyes). So I took off all the switch plates again and threw on a coat of paint.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo DSC_0446a.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/DSC_0446a.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I've been using Benjamin Moore's Onyx on our doors (you can see it here in action on the louvered doors below) and I decided to go a couple shades lighter on the walls in here. The color is called Day's End and it's a really pretty charcoal with blue undertones. It looks navy for part of the day, which I'm digging.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6381-1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6381-1.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The brown side of the melamine board takes paint SO well. The white side sort of deflects paint in the same way most IKEA furniture does, so I'd stick with the brown side even if I was going with a light paint color. I just brushed the paint on so I could get into the cracks between the planks easily. </div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6376.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6376.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">On Monday night my kids had a sleepover with their cousins at my sister's house so I took advantage of their absence and painted the floors. I decided I wanted to try a sort of medallion pattern in here, but wanted it to be not as busy as <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/07/on-painting-floors.html" target="_blank">the laundry room floors</a>.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6407.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6407.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I marked out my idea with painters tape and then painted most of the tiles the same color as I painted the kitchen floors (post coming there).</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6416.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/IMG_6416.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">And then I filled in the medallions with black paint.</div><br /><img alt=" photo aADSC_0456.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/aADSC_0456.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">This whole area will get reworked when we do the big kitchen renovation in a year or two, so I'm fine with this temporary fix on both the walls and the floors. I spent only about $50 on wood and supplies and I love how it's looking.</div><br /><img alt=" photo aDSC_0466.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/aDSC_0466.jpg" /><br /><br /><img alt=" photo aDSC_0422.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/aDSC_0422.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Here are those freshly sprayed closet and cabinet doors. Man, I love that <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-best-and-easiest-to-use-spray-gun.html" target="_blank">Critter sprayer</a>!</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><center></center></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo DSC_0679.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/DSC_0679.jpg" /><br /><br /><img alt=" photo aDSC_0436.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/aDSC_0436.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I also used the Critter to spray the chairs in here, which are all a similar style, but were thrift store finds on different days over the past couple weeks. </div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo sDSC_0669.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/sDSC_0669.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">And actually, the bright orange-red chair was a garbage room find from when we lived at the loft. I should dig up some before photos - it cleaned up really well with that new coat of sprayed paint.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo aDSC_0644.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/aDSC_0644.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Remember that mirror from <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/01/powder-bath-updates.html" target="_blank">the powder bath</a> in the brownstone? It fits perfectly on this little wall. I always love having a mirror by an exit door so I can verify I don't look like a complete fool before leaving my house. This came in handy earlier today when I noticed a big smear of black paint on my forehead as I was leaving to pick up the kids. Daughter-embarrassment dodged!</div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 1DSC_0615copy.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2010/1DSC_0615copy.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Lots and lots to do in here still, but, you know, it's progress!</div></div>
