Many people like to drink, and unfortunately, sometimes people choose to drive when they've had a bit too much to drink. If you choose to drive while intoxicated you run many risks, from getting in an accident, to getting charged with a DUI (driving under the influence) also sometimes called DWI (driving while intoxicated).

Getting a DUI can be a scary thing; and indeed, it is supposed to be. It's supposed to be a big deal because drinking and driving is a big deal.

Depending on your state, a DUI can have one or more of the following consequences:

- fines
- points on your license
- license suspension
- jail time

And if it's not your first DUI the consequences can be much more severe.

If you're charged with a DUI, it may be helpful for you to hire a lawyer. A lot of people immediately dismiss this idea, saying that lawyers are too expensive and they don't have the money to pay for a lawyer on top of whatever is coming with the DUI.
However, having a lawyer on your side may actually be advantageous in the long run. Consider the following:

Lawyers are familiar with the law. If you are representing yourself in court you will have a lot of studying to do just to be able to understand what is going on. A lawyer can walk you through all of this and go to bat for you in court. A lawyer will also likely be familiar with the intricacies of the law. They will know what questions to ask, what information to present you help your case, and anything that may be overlooked by the other side. They will also know if the arresting officer is leaving out any information or if he didn't follow protocol, which could help your case.

Lawyers have experience negotiating and dealing in court. Because of this experience, they may be much more likely to have the penalties reduced than you would defending yourself.

If they go to court frequently, they may also have a relationship with the judge and/or prosecuting attorney. This can make it easier for your lawyer to help negotiate more favorable terms for your charges.

These three points illustrate key advantages that only come from hiring a lawyer to represent you. And these advantages may end up saving you more than the cost of the attorney in the first place!
